Alocasia lauterbachiana variegata is a variegated Purple Sword Alocasia, with long serrated leaves patterned in green, cream, white and sometimes pale mint. The plant keeps the upright stem, narrow blade shape and dark purple underside of Alocasia lauterbachiana, then adds irregular pale patterning across the upper surface. As it matures, the plant becomes vertical and structured, with new leaves rising from a brown stem on mottled petioles.

Alocasia lauterbachiana is native from northern New Guinea to the Bismarck Archipelago. Mature species plants can form an erect brown stem to around 1.5 m, with leaves held in a terminal cluster, petioles to around 40 cm and narrow hastate blades with serrated to lobed margins. In warm, favourable conditions, cultivated plants can reach around 80–130 cm tall, with long leaves around 45–50 cm. Variegated plants usually grow more slowly than greener plants because pale tissue contributes less energy to the base.

Variegated sword leaves

Blades are long, pointed and serrated, with the broadest width toward the base and a narrow extension toward the tip. The upper surface carries irregular pale sections, marbling or streaks across the green blade. The underside remains purple to brown-purple, so a mature plant has a layered look: bright variegation from above, darker colour from below and mottled petioles through the centre.

New leaves often open softer and less defined. Pale areas may look cream, light green or white as the blade hardens, while the purple underside becomes clearer with maturity. A balanced base usually carries a mix of green and pale tissue. Greener leaves support the stem and root system, while paler leaves bring stronger pattern. Leaf-to-leaf variation can continue as the plant matures.

The variegated form needs the same warm root conditions as the green species, with extra attention to pale leaf tissue. Direct heat, rubbing, hard-water residue and strong fertiliser can mark pale areas quickly. A bright filtered position helps the plant build stronger petioles and clearer pattern visibility. The plant also needs space around the base, because long new leaves can mark if they expand against glass, walls, shelves or neighbouring plants.

Managing variegated sword leaves

• Light: Give clear indirect light or soft filtered morning sun. Brightness helps petioles stay strong, keeps variegation visible and maintains healthy green tissue.
• Watering: Let light, warmth and pot weight set the watering interval for this variegated plant.
• Substrate: Use an airy mix with bark, coco husk and mineral drainage. Keep larger roots supplied with moisture while the substrate remains open.
• Temperature: Sudden cold after repotting can slow recovery, so keep the plant in a stable warm position.
• Humidity: Keep air moisture steady while variegated sword-like leaves are unfolding. Higher humidity helps long leaves expand smoothly and reduces dry marks on pale edges.
• Feeding: Feed lightly to moderately when new leaves are forming with a diluted balanced fertiliser. Stronger feeding only belongs with active roots, warmth and good light.
• Pot choice: Choose a stable, draining pot that can balance the long variegated leaves. Repot gradually as roots occupy the container and taller leaves develop.
