Anoectochilus roxburghii 'Dreamcatcher' is a stunning cultivar of one of Asia’s most admired jewel orchids. Known for its velvety lime-green leaves patterned with an intricate golden lattice and a rich purple-black underside, this orchid brings luxury and elegance to any terrarium or orchidarium setup.
Unlike the typical species form, this cultivar boasts brighter gold venation and a more intense purple underside, creating dramatic contrast and visual depth. When viewed under soft, filtered light, its reticulated veins shimmer like fine metallic threads – a true botanical jewel for collectors.
The parent species, Anoectochilus roxburghii, occurs naturally in the moist forest floors of India, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. It thrives on mossy substrates and rich humus under dense canopy cover, enjoying consistent moisture and gentle airflow. Replicating these conditions is essential for success indoors.
For intense golden contrast, place under soft LED lighting in a high-humidity terrarium. Mist surrounding air, not the leaves, to prevent spotting while maintaining moisture levels.
Combine with moss cushions and miniature ferns in a bioactive terrarium for a lush, rainforest look. A spotlight or LED strip angled from above enhances the optical shimmer of its golden veins.
'Dreamcatcher' grows slowly, adding exclusivity to its visual appeal. Its rarity in trade, combined with its vivid venation and deep-toned leaf underside, makes it a centerpiece among jewel orchid enthusiasts.
Propagation is possible by rhizome division during active growth using sterile tools. Slow establishment makes mature plants highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
Flowers appear in fall, small and delicate, adding seasonal interest – but foliage remains the primary attraction year-round.
The shimmering effect is caused by microscopic structures in the leaf epidermis that refract light, rather than pigment alone – a unique adaptation of jewel orchids. Velamen-coated roots aid in water absorption and gas exchange in humid environments.
The genus name Anoectochilus combines Greek “anoektos” (open) and “chilos” (lip), describing the distinctive floral lip structure.
