Horticultural Sand – Extra drainage and stability for potting mixes
Horticultural sand is a washed, grainy mineral additive that improves drainage, aeration and weight in substrates. It prevents soil compaction, anchors top-heavy plants and helps water move evenly through the pot – essential for cacti, succulents, bonsai and terrarium substrates.
Why horticultural sand improves potting soil
- Better drainage: creates channels so excess water can leave the pot quickly.
- Added weight: stabilises tall or top-heavy plants that would topple in very light mixes.
- Prevents compaction: keeps mixes from collapsing into a dense, airless mass.
- Long-lasting and inorganic: does not decompose, so soil structure stays predictable for years.
