Botanical identity and natural origin of Leptochilus pteropus subsp. pteropus

Java fern is native across tropical and subtropical Asia, where it grows in wet streamside habitats and attaches its creeping rhizome to rocks, roots and other firm surfaces in or beside flowing water.

The species is also widely known as Microsorum pteropus, and both names continue to appear in aquarium and horticultural use.

Care for Leptochilus pteropus subsp. pteropus

Grow Java fern fully submerged in freshwater or emersed in a very humid paludarium. Keep the creeping rhizome exposed.

• Light: Give low to medium aquarium light.
• Attachment: Secure the rhizome to wood, rock or another firm surface. The roots will grip the surface as the plant establishes.
• Water and temperature: Keep the water around 22–28 °C and keep the aquarium's usual water conditions steady.
• Feeding: Add liquid aquarium fertiliser to the water as needed.
• Emersed growth: Keep humidity very high and the attachment surface consistently moist, with fresh air around the rhizome.
• Propagation: Divide a firm rhizome section carrying leaves and roots, or detach daughter plants after they have formed several small leaves and visible roots.

Common questions and issues with Leptochilus pteropus subsp. pteropus

• Regular dark dots appear beneath firm mature leaves: These are sporangia, the fern's normal reproductive structures. Leave the healthy frond in place.
• Small plantlets appear on an older leaf: This is a normal way for Java fern to produce new plants. Leave them attached until they have several leaves and roots, then separate them if you want new individual plants.
• The rhizome turns soft and black: A buried or debris-covered rhizome may have started to rot. Cut affected tissue back to firm healthy growth with a clean tool, discard all soft material and reattach the healthy section with the rhizome fully exposed.
• Algae coats the fronds: Excess light or changing nutrient levels may encourage algae on the slow-growing leaves. Reduce excessive light, use a consistent fertiliser routine and remove loose algae gently.

Leptochilus combines Greek leptos, “thin” or “slender”, and cheilos, “lip”. Pteropus combines Greek pteron, “wing”, and pous or podos, “foot”.

Georg Friedrich Kaulfuss established the genus Leptochilus in 1824 in Enumeratio Filicum, page 147.

Carl Ludwig Blume first described it as Polypodium pteropus in 1828 in Enumeratio Plantarum Javae, volume 2, additions and corrections. Christopher Roy Fraser-Jenkins later placed it in Leptochilus as Leptochilus pteropus in 2008 in Taxonomic Revision of Three Hundred Indian Subcontinental Pteridophytes, page 62.
