From seasonally dry forest to cloud forest

The wild range of Monstera deliciosa lies in southern Mexico and Guatemala. The species occupies seasonally dry forest, humid lowlands and cloud-covered mountain forest.

Care for white foliage and climbing growth

Light

Place the plant in bright, indirect light. Its green sections carry out most of the photosynthesis, so a dim position can slow growth and leave the plant with less capacity to recover from stress. Protect the extensive white tissue from hot direct sun, which can leave it dry and brown. Introduce any increase in light gradually. A grow light can provide more consistent brightness during darker months without exposing the leaves to strong midday sun.

Watering, roots and substrate

Check the moisture a few centimetres below the surface and lift the pot to judge its weight. Water when the upper layer has dried slightly and the pot feels lighter. Soak the entire rootball until water runs through the drainage holes, then empty the saucer or outer pot completely. Check the plant rather than following a fixed schedule, particularly during winter when the substrate dries more slowly.

Use a pot with drainage holes and an open, well-draining aroid mix. A peat-free base combined with coarse bark and perlite or pumice provides moisture around the roots without keeping them densely packed in wet substrate. When repotting, choose a container only slightly wider than the rootball. An oversized pot holds a larger volume of wet substrate around a relatively small root system and increases the risk of root rot.

Growth and support

Anchor a sturdy moss pole or another firm support in a stable container. Secure the main stem loosely with soft ties as it climbs, leaving the leaf stalks free to move. Guide aerial roots towards the support or substrate so they can attach. Installing or repositioning a large support is safest during repotting, when its position can be checked without forcing it through established roots.

Temperature, humidity and airflow

Keep the plant at a stable 18–25°C and protect it from temperatures below 15°C. Aim for 60–80% humidity, with gentle airflow around the foliage. Avoid cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and hot, dry air from radiators or heating vents. Do not leave water sitting on the leaves for long periods, particularly where airflow is limited.

Feeding

Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser about once a month while the plant is actively growing, following the dosage on the label. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows. Additional fertiliser cannot compensate for the lack of chlorophyll in the white tissue, and excessive mineral salts can damage sensitive roots.

Repotting and acclimatisation

After delivery, keep the plant in its original pot and substrate for the first four weeks while it adjusts to its new conditions. Avoid repotting, pruning and feeding during this period unless an urgent root problem requires intervention. Later, repot when roots have filled the container, the substrate has broken down or water no longer drains through it evenly. Spring or another period of active growth is the best time.

Managing very white growth

One almost entirely white leaf is not an immediate reason to prune. Watch the next leaves and the plant’s overall growth. If several consecutive leaves emerge with almost no green and the plant begins to weaken, it may need to be cut back to a node whose stem tissue contains more green. Inspect the stem and growth point carefully before cutting, as the pattern of the next shoot cannot be guaranteed.

Changes in variegation

The balance of green and white naturally varies between successive leaves. One unusually pale or green leaf does not require immediate action. Compare several new leaves and consider the plant’s overall growth before pruning. Firm white tissue is alive and does not need to be removed simply because it contains little or no chlorophyll.

If several consecutive leaves emerge with almost no green and the plant begins to weaken, cutting the main stem back may be necessary. First identify a lower node whose stem and growth point contain more green. The next pattern cannot be guaranteed, even when the selected node appears well balanced.

Treat an all-green side shoot separately from the main stem. If the side shoot continues producing fully green leaves and begins to outgrow the variegated growth, remove only that shoot at the point where it branches from the plant. If the main stem itself has reverted, cut it back only after identifying a clearly variegated node below the reverted growth. Use a clean blade and avoid pruning a newly delivered or otherwise stressed plant unless immediate intervention is necessary.

Climbing growth and support problems

If the stem leans away from its support, stabilise the support and container before adding more ties. Attach only the main stem with soft, loose ties. Keep every leaf stalk free, as tying a leaf stalk can restrict its movement or damage it as the leaf changes position. Check existing ties regularly and loosen or replace any that begin pressing into the stem.

Aerial roots do not all attach immediately. Guide them gently towards a moss pole, another suitable support or the substrate without forcing them into place. A firm aerial root that has not attached is not a health problem. Extend or replace a support that has become too short, preferably during repotting so it can be positioned without pushing it through established roots.

Long gaps between leaves, smaller new leaves or a decline in fenestration can occur when the plant lacks sufficient light, stable support or healthy roots. Young plants and plants recovering from stress can also produce simpler leaves temporarily. Check the light, root condition and support before adding fertiliser.

Yellowing or wilting

One older lower leaf that yellows gradually can be part of normal leaf ageing when the remaining foliage and new growth stay healthy. Several yellowing leaves, persistent wilting or a sudden decline require closer inspection.

Temporary drooping can follow transport or a rapid change in conditions. If the rootball is dry and the pot feels light, water the entire pot thoroughly and allow it to drain. If the substrate remains wet while the plant stays wilted or continues yellowing, check for additional signs of root trouble, such as a sour smell, collapsing substrate or soft tissue around the stem base.

Moist substrate after normal watering is not by itself a reason to unpot the plant. Inspect the roots only when several symptoms point to deterioration. Healthy roots should feel firm. Remove only roots that are fully soft, hollow or collapsing, using a clean tool. Replace substrate that has become compacted, sour-smelling or persistently waterlogged. After significant root loss, use a pot only slightly wider than the remaining root system. Pause feeding until healthy root or leaf growth resumes.

Brown edges, spots and scorch

Dry tan or brown patches that appear after a sudden increase in light are often sun damage, particularly on the white sections. Move the plant out of hot direct sun and introduce stronger light gradually. Damaged tissue will not regain its original colour, but the affected area should stop expanding once the cause has been removed.

If brown edges develop across several leaves, inspect the roots, check the substrate at different depths and look for mineral or fertiliser deposits around the pot and substrate surface. Also review humidity, watering consistency, cold draughts and direct heating air. If deposits are visible and the roots are healthy, flush the substrate thoroughly with water and let it drain completely.

Soft, wet or rapidly expanding spots need a different response from dry, stable marks. Isolate the plant, keep the foliage dry and provide gentle airflow. Remove only tissue that is actively collapsing, using a clean tool that is disinfected before and after cutting. If the damage continues spreading, identify the cause before applying a fungicide, pesticide or other treatment.

Unfurling leaves and physical damage

Do not pull, press or peel open a pale leaf that is still unfurling. Maintain stable warmth and humidity and allow it to open naturally. Check that the emerging leaf is not trapped against a tie, support or older leaf.

Pressure marks, creases and tears caused during transport or unfurling will remain visible. They may appear larger as the blade expands, but they do not require treatment when the surrounding tissue stays firm and the damage stops spreading.

Pest signs on leaves and nodes

Silvery scars accompanied by small dark dots can indicate thrips. Cottony white wax suggests mealybugs, while sticky residue and firmly attached brown or tan bumps can indicate scale insects. Fine webbing, pale stippling or dusty-looking leaf undersides can indicate spider mites. Inspect the undersides of leaves, leaf-stalk joints, nodes, aerial-root bases and folded new growth.

Isolate the plant, confirm the pest and use a treatment specifically labelled for it. Test sprays on a small, inconspicuous section first, avoiding fully white tissue where possible. Young and stressed leaves can retain spray marks. Follow the product instructions, including the stated repeat interval, and do not combine treatments unless their labels confirm that this is safe.

When to monitor and when to intervene

Dry pressure marks, old tears and sunscorch can remain visible indefinitely without harming the plant further. Monitor damage that stays dry, firm and unchanged. Intervene when an affected area continues expanding, becomes soft or wet, appears repeatedly on new growth, accompanies persistent wilting or root decline, or shows confirmed pest activity.

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves. The Latin epithet deliciosa means delicious, referring to the edible ripe fruit.
