Philodendron 'Congo Rojo' is a very easy-to grow, healthy hybrid of Philodendron 'Imperial red' and Philodendron tatei. It is a very popular plant for beginners. It has large, oval, leathery leaves. It is a compact, self-heading Philodendron. Young leaves are a bright red, maturing to burgundy red-purple and ultimately dark glossy green.
From the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), form Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendrons "loving trees," form philo- "loving" (see philo-) + dendron "tree" (form PIE *der-drew-, form root *deru- "to be firm, solid, steadfast," also forming words for "wood, tree"). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
