A true jewel among Alocasias, with its elongated, embossed foliage, Alocasia scalprum A. Hay is a tuberous, herbaceous species. Leaf blades similar in shape to a sharp dagger, the established blades are dark green with a tinge of blue while newly emerged foliage is a much lighter, lush green. Intricate venation pattern, once mature the leaves are thick and rubbery. This species shows extreme phenotypic diversity.
The specific epithet for this species, comes from the Latin scalprum, which refers to a tool used for scraping, paring, and cutting away, very similar to a modern knife, which the leaf of Alocasia scalprum resembles
Genus name comes form the Greek words a meaning without and Colocasia the name of a closely allied genus, form which it was separated.
