Philodendron verrucosum houseplant
  • Philodendron verrucosum Mathieu ex Schott is a species which can be extremely variable in appearance. It  is know for its wonderful velvety foliage and beautiful, colourful leaf undersides. Some of these Philodendrons are known to hold deep red lower leaf color into maturity and some to only show it when juvenile. It is usually hemiepiphytic, rarely terrestrial or epiphytic. Stem is appressed-climbing, densely scaly or setose, trichomes green to greenish white. Petioles are subterete, purplish violet to brownish, surface densely scaly, the scales of two distinct types, short, broad, often lacerate scales interspersed with long acicular scales, the latter erect, or spreading then erect. Leaf blades are broadly ovate-cordate, thinly coriaceous, moderately bicolorous. velvety to matte.

    form the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), form Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendrons "loving trees," form philo- "loving" (see philo-) + dendron "tree" (form PIE *der-drew-, form root *deru- "to be firm, solid, steadfast," also forming words for "wood, tree"). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
