Philodendron 'Red Emerald' variegata aka 'Strawberry shake' is one of the most sought-after colourful Philodendrons on the market. It is a variegated variety of the popular cultivar Philodendron erubescens 'Red emerald'. It is characterised by its scandent habit and beautifully variegated, very variable foliage and on deep red petioles.
Petioles are flattened on the upper surface, especially towards the apex, terete below, leaf blades are herbaceous, elongate ovate-triangular sagittate. It is a very quick and easy grower and will climb given suitable support.
From the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), from Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendros "loving trees," from philo- "loving" (see philo-) + dendron "tree" (from PIE *der-drew-, from root *deru- "to be firm, solid, steadfast," also forming words for "wood, tree"). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
