Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata rare houseplants

Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum variegata is a variegated variety of Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum (Schott ex Endl.) Sakur., Calazans & Mayo. It iss a plant in the genus Thaumatophyllum, in the family Araceae. Previously it was classified in the genus Philodendron within subgenus Meconostigma. The commonly used names Philodendron bipinnatifidum and Philodendron selloum are synonyms .The leaves are simple, large, deeply lobed, and are usually drooping. These can grow up to 1.5 meters long, and are attached to long, smooth petioles.  The trunk of T. bipinnatifidum is relatively thick and woody with characteristic “eye-drop” leaf scars. The variegated variety produces wonderfully coloured foliage with splashes and sometimes whole leaves of pale yellow variegation, where every sinle leaf emerges and looks different to the other.

 

It is an important plant in indigenous cultures in Paraguay, northern Argentina and Brazil.  The roots are being for binding and the berries as a sweet food and medicinal source.
