Strobilanthes alternata is a wet-tropical subshrub associated with eastern Malesia and long known in cultivation. It spreads through sheltered ground and low vegetation, where its stems can root at the nodes.

Much of the older horticultural and botanical literature uses the name Hemigraphis alternata. Strobilanthes alternata ‘Snow White’ is a cultivated selection of the species.

Growing a container tree or shrub

Leaf care, propagation and repotting: Pinch tips above a leaf pair to encourage branching, and remove a vigorous all-green shoot if it begins overtaking the variegated crown. Older stems naturally become bare and woody, so periodic renewal from healthy patterned tip cuttings is often more effective than severe pruning of an ageing woody base. Long gaps, bare lower stems and increasingly green growth usually mean ‘Snow White’ needs more filtered light and renewal from healthy patterned tips. Move it gradually into brighter conditions. A completely green shoot can outgrow the slower variegated growth and may be removed. Very pale shoots still need some green tissue if they are to grow strongly.

Soft roots, glassy stem bases or a sour wet mix reveal decay. Save firm patterned tips and start them in clean, porous mix. Webbing and pinprick pale marks point to mites. Thrips leave coarse silver scars with scattered black droppings. Check the undersides and the soft new growth before treating.

Older creeping stems naturally become thin in the centre. New distortion or a wet patch that expands is different and should not be dismissed as variegation. Set Strobilanthes ‘Snow White’ apart and seek a closer check if ring or mosaic patterns continue through several new leaves.
