Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet'

Alocasia ‘Antoro Velvet’, also known as Alocasia 'Chienlii', is a dark, finely pubescent Alocasia with deep green to almost black foliage. Fine leaf hairs are unusual in Alocasia and give the leaves a dense, soft surface.

The blades open with a velvety appearance and a muted finish that absorbs light rather than shining. New leaves rise on sturdy petioles and develop into arrow-leaning blades held close enough for the surface texture to stay visible.

Indoor growth on a warm root system

• Light: Give strong indirect light near an east window, softened south or west exposure, or a suitable grow light. Harsh glass-filtered sun can mark the dark surface.
• Watering: Water when the upper part of the mix has dried and the pot feels lighter. Drain thoroughly so the lower mix returns to air between waterings.
• Substrate: Use a fine-to-medium aroid mix with bark, coco fibre or chips, perlite, pumice or lava rock, and a small moisture-holding fraction.

• Propagation: Offsets or cormels need warmth, humidity and careful moisture until roots are active.

• Soft base: Check substrate temperature, drainage and root health. Cold wet mix can damage this compact Alocasia quickly.
• Crisp edges: Review watering gaps, dry air and heat from lamps or radiators.
• Yellow lower leaves: One older leaf may fade as a new leaf develops; several at once usually points to wet roots, low light or stress after moving.
• Fine stippling: Inspect the underside of leaves and petioles for spider mites before the matte surface loses colour.
