Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet' is a compact, dark-leaved member of the longiloba group, prized for near-black, softly haired foliage and an upright rosette. Fine pubescence gives a soft, velvety matte appearance under diffused light – a tactile contrast to glossy Alocasias. Often linked in horticulture to the unpublished name Alocasia chienlii, this selection responds to steady warmth, humidity, and precise watering with sculptural leaves and clean architecture. Learn more about the genus on our Alocasia page.
Longiloba-group forms occur in Borneo’s humid rainforest, commonly around ~500–1500 m elevation. Pubescence reduces glare and surface wetting in filtered light, while a porous forest substrate keeps roots moist yet aerated. Indoors, mirror those cues: bright, indirect light, stable humidity, and an airy mix that holds gentle moisture without stagnation.
Stays compact and upright rather than climbing. Micro-story: each new leaf emerges paler and softly haired, then deepens over several days to its signature midnight matte. Growth is slow to moderate when conditions are stable. Basal offsets may develop from mature corms; flowering indoors is uncommon.
See our genus-level tips in the complete Alocasia care guide.
Visual cue: healthy leaves keep a soft, even matte sheen; dull or patchy gloss usually points to uneven moisture or heat stress.
Textural, near-black foliage gives quiet drama beside glossy or variegated companions. A simple, dark pot amplifies the matte finish; rotate every few weeks for symmetry. Propagated responsibly through corm division by Foliage Factory partner growers.
Contains calcium oxalate crystals (Araceae). Ingestion or sap contact may irritate mouth or skin. Keep out of reach of pets and children; wash hands after cuts or repotting.
‘Antoro Velvet’ honours Indonesian grower Sahmantoro; “Velvet” references the leaf’s pubescent, light-diffusing surface. Treated horticulturally within the longiloba complex of Alocasia (family Araceae); Alocasia chienlii remains unpublished.
Ready to bring Alocasia 'Antoro Velvet' home? Despite its exotic look, it settles well once conditions are steady. Order now and enjoy dark, softly pubescent foliage with compact, sculptural presence.
