Hoya deykeae T.Green belongs to the section Hoya finlaysonii and is closely related to Hoya vitellinoides, Hoya vitellina and Hoya finlaysonii. With its heart-shaped and strongly truncated leaves, this plant looks like the product of a relationship between Hoya kerrii and Hoya callistophylla. The flowers are also fairly typical of most species of the Hoya finlaysonii complex and are slightly perfumed.

The genus was named in Modern Latin in honor of English gardener and botanist Thomas Hoy (c. 1750-1822).
