Aglaonema rotundum

A narrow recorded range around Medan

Aglaonema rotundum is accepted from the Medan area of northern Sumatra and grows in wet tropical forest. A documented wild collection was made beside a waterfall at about 360 m elevation. Its stem lies partly along the ground before the short growing end turns upward.

Care for clumping aroid roots and foliage

• Leaf care: Wipe the glossy leaves gently when dusty and remove only loose, fully dead sheaths. Keep water from collecting around the low crown and stem.
• Light: Use medium to bright filtered light. Direct sun can mark the leaves.
• Temperature, humidity and airflow: Keep the plant at steady warmth and away from chilling temperatures, particularly when wet. Aim for moderate to high humidity.
• Feeding: Use a complete houseplant fertiliser at a low dose sparingly during active growth. Feed less often when growth slows, and wait until newly arrived or rooted plants resume growth.
• Substrate, stem position and repotting: Use a fine, porous mix of coco coir or peat, small bark and perlite or pumice in a draining pot. Let a newly delivered plant settle before repotting.

Buried stems, wilting and root damage in Aglaonema rotundum

• Buried stem: The creeping stem belongs on the substrate surface. If it was covered during repotting, expose it and check that every hidden section remains firm.
• Wilting in wet mix: A loose plant and dark soft roots indicate root damage. Inspect the shallow root system and exposed creeping stem before disturbing the plant, then remove only soft dark roots and preserve firm tissue. A shining filament in Greek; rotundum means round

Aglaonema combines Greek aglaos, meaning shining or splendid, with nema, meaning thread or filament. The epithet rotundum is Latin for round, referring to the rounded leaf outline.
