Leucostele terscheckii (J.Parm. ex Pfeiff.) Schlumpb. best known in cultivation as Trichocereus terscheckii orEchinopsis terscheckii, is a huge treelike cactus species, called in Argentina cardon grande. At first columnar, and usually in age with numerous large arms, 10 to 12 meters high.
Etymology: Greek leukos ‘white, bright’ + Greek stēlē ‘(boundary) post’. Translated by Backeberg as “white column” (“weiße Säule”). For the bright white, bristly spines and the columnar habit. Perhaps inspired by the name Cereus leucostele (1908) = Stephanocereus leucostele.
