Philodendron erubescens 'New Red'

Philodendron erubescens 'New Red'a relatively new cultivar, characterised by its scandent habit and deep red petioles and stems just like Philodendron 'Red Emerald', but this plant also shows red undersides of leaves. Juvenile foliage emerges very dark red and turns into dark green with time.

Petioles are flattened on the upper surface, especially towards the apex, terete below, leaf blades are herbaceous, elongate ovate-triangular sagittate. It is a very quick and easy grower and will climb given suitable support.

form the Modern Latin genus name Philodendron (Schott, 1830), from Greek philodendron, neuter of philodendrons "loving trees," form philo- "loving" (see philo-) + dendron "tree" (form PIE der-drew-, form root deru- "to be firm, solid, steadfast," also forming words for "wood, tree"). The plant so called because it clings to trees.
