Phlegmariurus goebelii (Nessel) A.R. Field and Bostock is often sold under its synonyms' names: Huperzia or Lycopodium. It is an epiphytic fern with slender, pendulous stems. Its leaves are narrowly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, light green to light brown when mature, papery in texture with an entire margin.

The genus name comes from Phlegmaria, the epithet of the type species, and the Greek oura (tail), a reference to the fertile part of these plants that are in the form of a long tail (Pichi Sermolli 1971).
