Ficus altissima 'Yellow Gem'

Ficus altissima 'Yellow Gem' is a variegated cultivar of Ficus altissima Blume. It is a large, evergreen native of southeastern Asia. Like other figs, lofty fig often begins life as an epiphyte, growing on other trees (especially palms) until it sends its own roots into the ground, often encircling its host, and eventually displacing the host tree. It has also been found growing as a lithophyte on rock walls, stone or concrete buildings, and in cracks on bridges and turnpike overpasses.Introduced as a large shade tree but unsuitable for the urban landscape due to its immense size and extensive root system. Leaves are glabrous, elliptic to ovate. The 'Yellow Gem' cultivar grows beautifully variegated foliage - with light green/ yellow variegation along the leaf margins.

Potted and controlled it makes a wonderful houseplant.

Genus name c. 1400, from Latin ficus "fig, fig tree" (see fig). With capital letter, as the name of a large genus of trees and shrubs, chosen by Linnaeus (1753).
