Espostoopsis dybowskii (Rol.-Goss.) Buxb. is a remarkable columnar cactus and the sole species in its genus. Endemic to Brazil, it forms clusters of erect, unbranched stems that branch mainly near the base, giving rise to tall, slender columns. Its white, bell-shaped flowers open at night, releasing a delicate fragrance to attract nocturnal pollinators. While not the easiest cactus for beginners, it rewards attentive growers with relatively fast growth compared to many cereoid cacti.
This species is native to Minas Gerais, Brazil, where it grows on rocky slopes and hillsides in tropical savanna climates. Its night-blooming flowers are adapted to moth pollinators, while the tall, ribbed stems enable efficient water storage and survival during seasonal droughts. Its restricted distribution adds to its rarity in cultivation.
Unlike many widely available columnar cacti, Espostoopsis dybowskii holds a unique position as the only representative of its genus. Its combination of rarity, elegant form, and fragrant nocturnal flowers makes it a highlight in serious cactus collections. For growers ready to provide the right conditions, it delivers both botanical significance and ornamental beauty.
The genus name Espostoopsis means “resembling Espostoa,” a related Andean cactus genus. The epithet dybowskii honors French naturalist Jean Dybowski (1856 – 1928), known for his botanical and exploratory work.
If you’re seeking a columnar cactus with rarity and elegance, Espostoopsis dybowskii is an exceptional choice. With its pure white night blooms and architectural stems, it offers both beauty and botanical distinction. Order now and secure a centerpiece for your advanced cactus collection.
