Goeppertia (Calathea) dressleri 'Helen Kennedy' is a broad-leaved prayer plant with layered green markings and deep purple undersides. The leaves have a soft satin to lightly velvety finish, so the plant looks richer and more textured than many narrow-striped Goeppertia.
Each leaf rises from the base on its own petiole. As the leaves lift in the evening, the purple undersides become more visible and give the plant stronger contrast.
Calathea dressleri was first described by botanist Helen Kennedy from collections made in Panama, and the species is now placed in Goeppertia. The plant grows best with warm roots, filtered light, steady moisture and high humidity.
'Helen Kennedy' is grown for foliage rather than height. New leaves emerge rolled and soft, then firm up as the pattern and underside colour develop. Because the leaf surface is broad and fine-textured, dry air, harsh sun, and mineral-heavy water often show as dull patches, brown edges, or uneven leaf expansion.
Goeppertia dressleri 'Helen Kennedy' is generally grouped with Calathea and other Marantaceae plants listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Pets that chew leaves can still get mild digestive irritation, so repeated nibbling is worth preventing.
Goeppertia belongs to Marantaceae, the prayer plant family, and the genus honours Johann Heinrich Robert Göppert. The species history is tied to Helen Kennedy’s original description of Calathea dressleri from Panama material; the cultivated name 'Helen Kennedy' keeps that connection visible in horticulture.
Goeppertia dressleri 'Helen Kennedy' has broad purple-backed leaves, layered green markings and a soft satin-to-velvety surface.
